Ladies Night

Saturday 25th October 2025:

Rather than put on a formal Ladies Night I decided as WM that Humber Lodge 57 would try something different this year, where everyone could enjoy a good meal and good company without the hassle of overloud music and having to dance. Over the years increasing deafness has become something of a trial; without hearing aids I can't make out conversations because of the insistence of the DJ or band in turning up the volume every few minutes, with hearing aids it's even worse and I have to leave the room because it's so loud. Other Brethren have had the same difficulty, I've seen, and there have often been as many people outside the action as there are dancing. Time for something different.

I decided on a Murder Mystery, inviting guests not only from Humber 57 but from Lord Bolton 3263 and Kingston 1010 (we worked well together in the Allo Allo Evening earlier in the year) and other Lodges, with their partners and friends. The dining room at Beverley Road could have accommodated more, but the six large tables we used (plus the "top table" with the Quirky Murder Crew as a focal point) left enough space for the actors to mingle with the guests between courses and for the singer, Jade Ashleigh to perform (beautiful selection while we were eating - not too loud, much appreciated by all.) One of the crew was also a magician and demonstrated his skills from table to table.

So what happened? On each table were quiz sheets with cryptic clues to help solve the murder mystery (and there were some high scorers - particularly amongst the Humber Brethren - I was well impressed) which involved some use of technology (Google maps etc - I didn't stand a chance) but close attention was also needed to the action going on at the Wedding Reception at which we were all guests. The drama unfolded as we watched - already we were getting to know the characters as they'd mingled with us all beforehand, introducing themselves over the nibbles and Prosecco.

Who killed the bullying Lady Norma? (She had her eye on David Terry because she appreciated, she said, his great big bank account.) Was the groom gay? Was Butler telling the truth? There were plenty of clues and even more red herrings.

The evening was a delight from start to finish - the bar remained open till late and everyone was happy. (See Matthew's photographs below.)

My thanks in particular go to Matthew Barber and Peter Kenyon-Brodie who did all the organising from the very start, but also to everyone who supported this venture. A considerable sum was raised for the 2029 Festival in addition.

The ladies, of course looked stunning - and I didn't have to embarrass myself attempting to dance! It was a splendid evening and everyone enjoyed it.

Thank you all.

Eddie Wildman, WM

Saturday 12th October 2024:

Ladies night at the Mercure Grange Park Hotel in Willerby was a lovely venue for a special occasion. There were other functions on; Bro Craig Morrison, smart in his bow tie at the entrance was mistaken for a bouncer by those that didn't know him. The food was good, the band enthusiastic (some of us older ones thought it got a little loud towards the end - but the ladies looked terrific and graced the ballroom floor with delightful dresses and dance moves. Congratulations to the Worshipful Master, Alan Todd, and his Worshipful wife, Trish, for a fulfilling and thoroughly enjoyable evening with those lovely touches - the buttonholes for the officers, the glasses of wine on arrival. What a super night!

A happy occasion!

One special highlight of the Humber year is the Ladies Night. In 2019, Mrs Gail Smith, the Worshipful Master's Lady, organised a fabulous Ladies Night at Dagger Lane, a familiar venue, as she is responsible for organising the Weddings and Social Functions there. This was a magnificent occasion: the place was full of happy people. Good food, good music, and of course, the wonderful company of the ladies, who looked terrific. I asked Gail afterwards if she would do a brief write-up of the event. Here is her reply.

What ladies night meant to me

Hard work - making sure all eventualities were covered

Part time booking agency – Finding and booking two artistes

Events co-ordinator – making sure all the planning comes together

Sleepless nights – speech writing

Table dressing – Ensuring the tables were correctly dressed and looked resplendent

Shopper – shopping for ladies favours more of a labour of love for what lady doesn’t like shopping

Dresser – making sure the WM who has put me through all this, looks well dressed and decent

Would I do this all again? YES, because it was rewarding to see all my efforts come to fruition and it was especially nice to see the attendees looking so beautiful and making the effort to enjoy the evening to the full and especially supporting Humber 57. It was one of my favourite nights which I shall always treasure. I would like to thank all that attended for making it such a special night so memorable. My reward, well the reward for a job well done is to have done it and done it well.

 Gail Smith

Thanks, Gail! You were magnificent!
